Special Moments in the history of Sualkuchi:

Mahatma Gandhi’s Visit

The day was 9th of January, the year 1946 and the time was 3.40pm when Mahatma Gandhi along with Satish Dasgupta, Pyarelal Kanugandhi, Bharatam Kumarappa and Ralkumari Amrit Kaur disembarked on the Sualkuchi ghat. They all came in the ship ‘Dabin’. Gandhiji came to Sualkuchi to visit the handloom exhibition which going on there at that time. Thereafter he gave a public lecture, which was attended by almost 40 thousand people.

A.P.J.Kalam’s Visit

On Tuesday the 17th of October 2006 former President of India Shri A.P.J Kalam visited the silk village of Assam Sualkuchi. Shri Kalam is the first President to have visited this village. He landed at a specially built helipad on the banks of the Brahmaputra at 3.05 p.m. on that day. He was delighted to visit Sualkuchi and appreciated the efforts of the talented weavers who have been able to carve out a name of their village in the international sphere.

Thailand’s Commerce Minister’s Visit

A high-power Thai delegation to the North-Eastern Council (NEC), led by the country’s Commerce Minister Krirk Krai Jirapaet, along with DONER Minister Mani Sankar Aiyer visited Sualkuchi, the nerve centre of Assam Silk fabrics in the early part of 2008. They had interactions with the local weavers and visited the Kusum Silk Factory. They also visited the handloom factory of Sailen Kalita, and finally were taken to the Sima Weaving Factory and the Rionky Weaving factory to have a first hand experience of the process of silk production. The team was very much impressed with the hand-woven and natural dyes.

Spanish Ambassadors Visit

The Spanish Ambassador to India, Mr. Rafael Conde De Saro, and his wife, Ms Maria Bassolos De Conde, had also visited the Sualkuchi silk village. The De Conde couple, who were on a private three-day visit to Assam, admired the weaving skill of Assamese women whom they had come across at looms. Maria Bassolos De Conde was fascinated when she saw Assamese weavers weaving the golden thread Muga silk on traditional handlooms of this silk village. She was overjoyed when her husband Rafael De Conde De Saro, bought her a Muga silk sari.
